About Cuernavaca
Cuernavaca is located in a beautiful mountainous region of Mexico, situated on seven intersecting ravines just south of Mexico City. An elevation of nearly 5,000 feet creates outstanding panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including sight of the snow-capped volcanoes – the guardians of Mexico – Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl.

In the Classical Nahuatl language spoken by the indigenous Aztecs, Cuernavaca means “near the woods”, however, today it is known as “the city of eternal spring”. Located on the southern slope of the Sierra Chichinautzin Volcanic Belt, Cuernavaca’s climate is perfectly balanced by the warm air rising from the valley and the cool air flowing down from the mountaintops. The average daily temperatures range from 66F (19C) in the winter to 74F (23.5C) in the summer, creating a stable and consistent “eternal spring”.

Cuernavaca is the capital city of the state of Morelos, however, is relatively small and easy to walk around. The downtown area is only one square mile in total. The city is an eclectic melting pot of fine restaurants and boutique stores combined with historic buildings, pleasant gardens, archeological sites, and cultural interests.

Cuernavaca has been an ever-present part of Mexico’s colorful history. It was originally the site where many Aztec emperors had their summer homes, and later, was the location for the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortes’ palace. More recently, Cuernavaca has been the home to a broad variety of individuals from around the world. It has been the home of international jet-setters since the 1960’s, and interestingly was the sanctuary for the exiled Shah of Iran, Haiti’s Jean Paul Duvalier (aka Baby Doc), and Italy’s last princess, Maria Beatrice of Savoy.

Today, Cuernavaca is the home to many wealthy Mexican citizens and foreign expatriates who take advantage of the sprawling estate homes, the idyllic weather conditions, the exceptional scenery, and the quaint, historic city.
